Advanced Overnight Camp – Jalama

Sunday July 31-Thursday August 4

Our Elite boot camp is an intensive training program designed to take competitive surfers to the next level. Throughout the course of the week surfers will work with professional surfers and coaches who will educate on what it takes to be a successful amateur and professional surfer; talk about competitive strategies, and about direct experience. Our focus is to work directly with each athlete to define competitive and free surfing goals while assessing current standings and skill levels. We build off of the fundamentals of good surfing, gauging wave selection, speed, power, flow, and repertoire. Then we provide feedback and technical advice.

Each day is broken down into free surfing and contest training sessions, along with scheduled electives and free time. Free surfing sessions focus on pushing the limits, creativity, getting the shot/ clip, and technique analysis. Contest training sessions focus on developing winning strategies, maximizing scoring potential, time management, and developing positive mental tools for playing the game. Mock heats with professional surfers also teach how to control the line up and build house.

Each session is documented by professional lensman and reviewed by coaches.
A picture tells a thousand words, and video captures the real time truth. We have teamed up with professional lensmen Branden Aroyan and Ryan Nufer to document each session through video and still photography for coaching and portfolio building purposes. During sessions, students will be periodically brought to the beach to review footage with coaches and then given focal points to improve technique and keys to landing moves that are being worked on. After dinner each evening still and video highlights will be showcased. At the end of the week each camper will receive an edited video part and DVD of images for personal usage. Video and photo highlights will include land, water, and aerial (drone) footage.

With Andy Schmeiss and Johnny G’s Intrinity

The stronger and more flexible the body and mind, the more confident the athlete. This premise has always been the credo for Coach Keeto, so when friend and local fitness guru, Andy Schmeiss and Johnny G opened new gyms, and contacted him for cross training, the idea was put into motion to set up training days for team riders.

Andy Schmeiss has been at the forefront of Surfing specific training since the concept emerged 12 years ago. He has trained the Coffin brothers, Lakey Peterson, and Kilian Garland since they were grommets. We are setting up training days for Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon’s for summer and into the fall. Details forthcoming.

Johnny G is an international fitness super hero with a new program just for surfers. His new Intrinity Gym opened up in Paseo Nuevo and is all about using the power of gravity to increase strength and flexibility. His revolutionary Intrinity boards allow for never seen before cross training that simulates surfing. A long time Surf Happens parent and program member we are honored to offer the opportunity to train at his gym as well.  (contact for info)
