Hugs For Cubs Surf Day 2010
July 10th, 2010 Santa Claus Lane
On Saturday, July 10, Surf Happens will co-host a Hugs For Cubs Surf Day for children and their families afflicted by cancer at Santa Claus Lane in Carpinteria from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the fifth consecutive year, the premier surf school is teaming up with the Santa Barbara Forresters to produce this amazing event in an effort to share the healing power of the ocean with the little heroes who are surviving their battle with the disease, and also provide a fun and carefree beach day for their families and friends.
The beach day includes slip'n' slide and indo boarding, dodge ball and beach games, surf instruction, music, killer food a surf contest finale for all participants for the longest ride. Plus, all participants will receive a Surf Happens T-shirt and hat as well as a cool trophy. The Hugs for Cubs event was created by Eric Pintard as a way to share the stoke and positive energy of the ocean with kids who are dealing with cancer. Pintard also founded the Hugs For Cubs organization that provides funds and relief to local families battling cancer.
Eric Pintard himself succumbed to cancer in 2004, but one of his last wishes was that his dream to support and provide for local children with cancer and their families continues. His father, Bill Pintard, manager/coach of the Santa Barbara Forresters, along with a dedicated crew of supporters from Hugs For Cubs and the Teddy Bear Foundation, including the Lesh Family, contacted Surf Happens to carry on the tradition. Now entering its fifth consecutive year, Surf Happens is honored to continue Pintard's dreams and his Hugs For Cubs Foundation. Last year Surf Happens reached a new goal by having the most ever participants in the event with 28 kids coming out to participate. After all, this is all about the kids, our community and giving back through what we love.
The Forresters also show up each year as well, learning to surf and team-building through the event. They've even gone as far as donning a Roxy T-shirt and going down the slip' n 'slide in search of fun and to bring a smile to the participating kids' faces.
The motto at Surf Happens is "You can do it" and" Step Into A Smile". The Hugs for Cubs Surf Day allows participants to do both. Watching the eyes of the kids and parents light up and to see their energy levels revitalized is one of our biggest rewards each year.
"Ohana" means family in Hawaiian and the Santa Barbara area is filled with a tight-nit crew of surfers who make this event possible as well as embody its meaning.
