ITINERARY

First Descents – Santa Barbara, CA: September 11 – 17, 2011

Sunday, September 11: Welcome to First Descents!

  • Participants will arrive at the Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) between 11:00am – 3pm.
  • FD Staff will meet participants at the airport and drive together as a group to Elelcapitancanyon_15.jpegCapitan Cabins.
  • 4pm: Getting settled at El Capitan, and meeting the Surf Happens crew.
  • 5pm: Some quick paperwork and free time
  • 6:30pm: Dinner
  • 8pm: Drum circle and first campfire

 Monday, September 12

  • 7am: Breakfast
  • 9am – 1pm: Orientation & First Surf Lesson: El Capitan Point   
  • Introduction to sport
  1. Reading Wind, Waves, Tides, Currents (WWTC)
  2. Geography of Point Break
  3. Turtle philosophy
  4. Fundamental movements of Turtle & Chim Chim Phase
  5. Surfing
  • 1pm: Lunch
  • 2pm – 5pm: Surfing Continued
  1. Reading WWTC
  2. Gauging Ocean Conditions
  3. How, Where, Why waves break
  4. Team Building
  • 5:30-6:30 Free Time
  • 6:30: Dinner back at El Cap
  • 8pm – Drum Circle & campfire

Tuesday, September 13

  • 7am: Breakfast
  • 9am – 2pm: Surfing Lesson Santa Claus Lane

  • 3:30-5:30 : Surf Session – El Capitan Point
  • 5:30-6:30 Free Time
  • 6:30 Dinner
  • 8pm: Nightly campfire & Karaoke!

Wednesday September 14 – Off-water Day!

  • 7am: Optional yoga (Teva volunteer)
  • 8am: Breakfast
  • 9am – 12pm: Pro surf exhibition/beach time (in partnership with Teva, details TBD)
  • 1pm: Lunch
  • 2pm – 5pm: Alternate activities in the area (in partnership with Teva, details TBD)
  • (Surf Happens instructors to be part of the team for all activities)
  • 6:30: Dinner
  • 8pm: Nightly campfire

Thursday, September 15

  • 7am: Breakfast
  • 8am: Road Trip To Jalama Beach
  • 9am – 1pm: Surfing Lesson - Jalama Beach

  2. Gauging Ocean Conditions
  3. How, Where, Why waves break
  4. Ocean Knowledge Lesson – Beach Break – More Advanced
  • 1pm - Lunch
  • 2pm: Drive back to El Capitan
  • 3pm: Yoga/Stretching
  • 4pm:  Pool training
  • 5pm - 6:30: Free Time
  • 6:30: Dinner
  • 8pm: Campfire
  • 9pm: Night Hike

Friday, September 16 – Graduation Surf Day

  • 7am: Breakfast
  • 8am: Beach Walk to check surf
  • 9am – 2pm: Surfing Lesson El Capitan or Santa Claus Lane (waves dependent)

  2. Gauging Ocean Conditions
  3. How, Where, Why waves break
  4. Ocean Knowledge Lesson – Beach Break
  • (Lunch @ 12:30)
  • 2:00pm-3:30pm – Yoga/Cross Training, art projects (Electives)
  • 3:30-5:30: Surf Session – Ocean Rafting/ Wave Riding
  • 5:30-6:30 Free Time
  • 6:30: Luau
  • 7:30-8:30 Closing Ceremonies
  • 8:30-9:30 Slide Show & Video Presentation From Week

Saturday, September 17

- An early breakfast and departure back to the airport.
