Winter Surf Camps 2010

Winter Camps Begin December 20th

9:00am-2:00pm $500 per week  December 20-31 2010 Our Winter Surf Camps are geared towards the intermediate and advanced surfer looking to take their skills to the next level. The peak months for waves in Santa Barbara are between October and April when the North Pacifc storm activity sends a steady stream of waves our way. The conditions are often glassy and warm with excellent surf along the entire coast. Winter camps are mobile and we use our local knowledge to transport students to the best locations. Group sizes remain small with no more than four people per group.

Focus Points

  • Goal Setting & Cross Training
  • Surfing new spots and how to catch waves in a crowd
  • Overcoming fear
  • Advanced technique
  • Learning new maneuvers (from bottom turns to aerials and beyond)
  • The art of competitive strategy
  • Studying video and still photography

Day Camps

2011 Summer Camps Begin June 6th

It’s like Disneyland In The Sand! Our summer day camps are the perfect destination to learn the fundamentals of surfing in a safe and rewarding environment. Held at Santa Claus Lane, one of Santa Barbara’s most beloved beaches and officially dubbed “The World’s Safest Beach.” Even sand bars, consistent break and lack of hazards, create a world class learn-to-surf-wave, which during the right swell becomes magical.

Ages for the day camps are 4-17
with an even variety of age groups each week that help to form a “tribal” atmosphere where the youngest kids are adopted by the older students who bond with Junior Instructors and Instructors. Our teaching methodology allows us to work with a variety of ages and levels each week with instructors focusing on the categories in which students fall. All instructors are CPR and First Aid certified and have taken the Surf Happens surfing specific life saving course. In addition background checks have been made on all personnel to ensure the safety of students.

Unparalleled in our expertise in the field of surfing, our methods have been tested both domestically & abroad for the last eleven years with over 9,500 students taught. Our primary focus is on fun, fitness, and ocean safety.

We systematically introduce the lifestyle and sport of surfing through progressive technical and knowledge based phases that resemble a martial art system. Through this method it becomes easier for students to understand movements and ocean knowledge, while enabling our team to gauge progress, monitor them, and create groups based on age, swimming ability, experience, and skill.

While in the water students wear colored jerseys signifying their level, and may graduate to the next phase based on achievment tests. Sand Crabs (White) Turtle (Green) Chim Chim (Blue)  Advanced Surfers (Orange)  JI’s (Yellow)  Instructors (Red). We believe that what the mind understands the body will follow and as part of the “Turtle” phase teach safety and oceanography, history, and etiquette that applies on any beach in the world. Our core values are based upon respecting the self, others, and the environment, while applying the mind and body towards dreams and passions with discipline and determination.

Spearheaded by Surf Happens owner Chris “Uncle Keet” Keet our staff have been running camps at this location for eleven years working with entire generations of local and visiting students. We make learning fun and take the time to share our experiences while getting to know students. No other surf camps in our area come close. Experience the difference through the experts in surfing instruction, Surf Happens.

We are located on the southern end of the beach directly before reaching the first building on the Lane, SALT. Look for the Surf Lessons sign and our trailer as well as tents and flags on the beach and follow the easement to our headquarters where we are located from June until September each year.
