Learn to Surf at Summer Camp
We are the original surf camp at Santa Claus Lane, one of Santa Barbara’s most beloved beaches, officially dubbed “the world’s safest beach.” If you’re looking for a great beach to learn to surf, you’ve come to the right Santa Barbara surf school.
Ages for the day camps are 4-17 with an even variety of age groups each week that help to form a “tribal” atmosphere. The youngest kids are adopted by the older students and both bond with junior instructors and instructors, forming a positive environment that enriches the learning experience.
Highly Trained Instructors
All instructors are CPR and First Aid certified and have taken the Surf Happens surfing specific life-saving course. In addition, background checks have been made on all personnel to ensure the safety of our students.
The Surf Happens Teaching Method
We systematically introduce the lifestyle and sport of surfing through progressive, technical, and knowledge-based phases. These phases resemble a martial arts system. Through this method, it becomes easier for students to understand movements and ocean knowledge. This also enables our team to gauge progress, monitor, and create groups based on age, swimming ability, experience, and skill. While in the water, students wear colored jerseys signifying their level, and may graduate to the next phase based on achievement tests throughout the course of the camp.

We believe that if the mind understands, the body will follow. As part of the Turtle phase, we teach safety and oceanography, history, and etiquette that applies on any beach in the world. Our core values are based upon respecting the self, others, and the environment, while applying the mind and body towards dreams and passions with discipline and determination.
Spearheaded by Surf Happens owner Chris, “Uncle Keet,” our staff have been running camps at this location for sixteen years working with entire generations of local and visiting students. We make learning fun and take the time to share our experiences while getting to know our students. Experience the difference with the experts in surfing instruction.
We are located on the southern end of the beach directly before reaching the first building on the Lane, SALT. Look for the surf lessons sign and our trailer as well as tents and flags on the beach and follow the easement to our headquarters where we are located from June until September each year.
